Downtown St. Catharines comes together for Out of the Cold Supper program

As another season draws to a close, the St. Catharines Downtown Association (SCDA) extends a sincere thank you to the dedicated volunteers and Downtown Business Members who came together to provide hot meals across St. Catharines.

From November 1 to March 31 each year, the Out of the Cold Supper program offers meals and engagement to our neighbors facing food insecurity, homelessness, or social isolation. This season, over 23,000 meals were served, highlighting the program’s impact.

The program is run by the St. Catharines Out of the Cold Interchurch Committee chaired by Susan Venditti, former CEO of Start Me Up. It includes many Downtown organizations such as the Niagara Artists Centre, Silver Spire United Church, Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. George’s Anglican Church, Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas Anglican Church, and Queen Street Baptist Church.

Dinners are held by a different organization each night of the week.

This was the second year of involvement for the SCDA, serving 3 nights and following the lead of the NAC in collaborating with Downtown Restaurants, many of whom return year after year to help.

Special thanks go to Ludology Boardgame Cafe, The Office Tap & Grill, and newcomer Solaia Cucina e Cantina for partnering with the SCDA this year, and to Mahtay Cafe & Lounge, Dispatch Restaurant, OddBird, The Merchant Ale House, and Ruffino’s (NOTL), who have been serving through the NAC.

Volunteers from the SCDA (including Business owners and staff along with City of St. Catharines Councillors, staff, and engaged community members) – served these meals out of the Knights of Columbus Hall with care and compassion.

The SCDA was grateful to welcome Costco Business Centre as a sponsor this year. Their support helps offset the costs of supplies. The success of this program depends on the collective generosity of many hands and the support of donations helps to ensure organizations can continue to meet ongoing needs.

If you’re interested in becoming involved with the SCDA for future seasons, please contact Together, we can continue spreading warmth and kindness in our community.
