NEW BUSINESS: BERG COUNSELLING

Welcome Berg Counselling, a new practice that is dedicated to helping clients “find purpose in their pain” at 110 James Street. Joshua Berg, a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist, has brought therapy to the heart of Downtown, adding a valuable resource to the community.

Growing up in Fonthill, Joshua comes from a long line of business owners. His strong passion to help people led him to pursue a career in therapy while he was completing his master’s degree. Joshua has a particular place in his heart for the community; he began working more than 15 years ago at Bethesda Services before running the Salvation Army Street Outreach Truck in St. Catharines. Joshua shows his dedication to the betterment of the community by giving $5 from each session to Start Me Up Niagara in the months of November and December.

Joshua’s laid-back style appeals to clients, who take comfort in his candour regarding his own healing process. Working with adults in Ontario who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, difficult relationships, difficulties as first responders, and men’s concerns is Berg Counselling’s area of expertise. Joshua uses well-established, science-based therapies, focusing on resolving attachment issues often caused by events from childhood.

Joshua started his business in 2019 with virtual sessions, but in response to the need for face-to-face communication, he opened a physical location. His strategic decision to locate in downtown St. Catharines matched the diversified and expanding Niagara population.

Recognizing the financial barriers to therapy, Joshua addresses the issue of costs, emphasizing that 76% of Canadians have health insurance benefits that often cover mental health services. Additionally, students at Brock University and Niagara College have allocated funding each year for therapy outside their campus services.

Joshua also takes great satisfaction in giving the client experience priority. There is electronic intake, consent forms, and booking, so clients don’t have to print paperwork. Simple billing and email receipts are provided as part of this streamlined process, which makes it easier to submit for insurance reimbursement.

Berg Counselling is planning to extend the team in the future, beyond its current size of just one member. There are exciting things ahead for Berg Counselling. We are excited to see Joshua start this new business and invite you to schedule a 15-minute appointment at www.bergcounselling.ca to speak with him personally.

Welcome Downtown!
