This year’s Emancipation Day STC celebrations will include a special downtown community event marking the 175th anniversary of Harriet Tubman’s arrival in St. Catharines, where she made her home for nearly 10 years.
The St. Catharines Downtown Association, in partnership with Tubman Tours Canada and Matter of Black, with support from the Tourism Partnership of Niagara, will host the celebration on Saturday, July 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Downtown St. Catharines.
The event, taking place on James Street (between Church + King Street), will expand the Saturday St. Catharines Farmers Market experience with additional vendors, food, family activities, and live entertainment by DJ Errol and Rennatha + VYBE.
The highlight of the day will be the launch of a permanent self-guided Black History Tour of Downtown St. Catharines, created by Rochelle Bush of Tubman Tours Canada, followed by a commemorative community walk honouring Harriet Tubman’s enduring connection to our city. The celebration is part of the full Emancipation Day STC weekend, beginning Friday evening with Spotlight Comedy and concluding Sunday with The Big Picnic at Lakeside Park.
